BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Euthyna was the examination of accounts which every public official underwent on the expiry of his office. In ancient Athens the examination consisted of two parts; the logos (account) concerned the handling of public money by the official and was the responsibility of a board of ten logistai (accountants); the euthynai proper was the process whereby any citizen could raise an objection as to the official's conduct in office, and was the responsibility of a board of ten euthynoi appointed by the council. These officials could dismiss the accusations or pass them on to the courts. Comparable accounting procedures are attested epigraphically in many other Greek states, oligarchic as well as democratic.
