- Christians of Eastern Europe and of the countries around the Eastern Mediterranean, who belong to Churches that have retained their original rite (Byzantine, Syriac, Coptic etc.) and their own theological tradition, but have been incorporated in the Catholic Church. Most of these Churches emerged during the modern era, when Christian communities of the Near East and Eastern Europe acknowledged papal supremacy and were united with the Church of Rome.
