ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- Term introduced by the end of the 20th century to describe the new theatre forms that have emerged since the 1970s. It refers to theatre beyond drama, at a time ‘after’ the authority of the dramatic paradigm in theatre and was born as a response to the emergence of new media technologies. The abandonment of the dramatic text as the central element of the performance and the end of the representation of a fictive cosmos, the mimetic staging of a fable (story), are its principle features. The text, whenever it is used, is merely one element of the entire composition and has the same value as gesture, music, visual images, dance, poetry, documentary film or oral narratives. Postdramatic theatre has broad horizons and is characterised by ambiguity, polysemy or even lack of significance; it doesn’t “signify” but it “is”; it invites the spectator to find the meaning and the correlations. It is elliptical or overwhelming and determined by the absolute, non-significant, presence of the body leading to new communication and participation processes. It reflects the “performative turn” and owes much to new French philosophy and the strategies of deconstruction, the unstable meanings and the ambiguous shaping of identity.
