ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- A privilege granted to Athenian citizens in ancient Athens. Very rarely and in exceptional circumstances, the honorand was granted the right to free meals for life in the prytaneion, or even the right to free meals for his descendants. According to legislation, the right to free meals in perpetuity was granted as early as 5th century BC to generals who had won great victories. The grant of free meals for life was accompanied by front seats at the games and the erection of a statue. This grant was registered in the honorific decree which recorded the resolution of the Assembly.
