ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- Members of the Catholic Capuchin Order, which emerged as a branch of the Franciscan Order and subsequently was recognised as an autonomous order in 1528. The main characteristic of Capuchin monks was the emphasis on leading a frugal life in a framework of poverty, which they viewed as a revival of the rule of St. Francis. During the Counter-Reformation the Capuchin monks played a significant role in the Catholic Church's counteroffensive with their missionary work, their preaching and their providing succour to the lower social strata, particularly during outbreaks of epidemics.
