1658Popularisation of science
ΠΛΑΤΥΤΕΡΟΙ ΟΡΟΙ
ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- Τhe process of disseminating simplified accounts of knowledge produced by scientists to the non-expert public. This view for popularisation, which is regarded as dominant, was shaped in the 19th century, when the wide public began to have access to scientific knowledge through books, periodicals, public lectures, sites of expositions and museums. However, it has been criticised because on the one hand it is impossible to reflect the explicit and implicit objectives, pursuits and strategies of the actors engaged in this process; and on the other hand it entails socially constructed demarcations concerning the status of scientific knowledge, and the actors themselves.
