ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- French Calvinists of the 16th and 17th centuries. Relations between Huguenots, many of whom belonged to the French nobility, and state power, which remained Catholic, was often marked by tensions culminating in persecutions, like the massacres that took place on St Bartholomew's Day (1572). The Edict of Nantes (1598) granted religious rights to the Huguenots, but pressure on them intensified in the course of the 17th century and the Edict was revoked in 1685. Most Huguenots left France and settled in Protestant countries.
