ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- The principal method of data acquisition in archaeology, involving the systematic uncovering of archaeological remains through the removal of the deposits of soil and the other material covering them. Through this method the archaeologist examines, records and interprets archaeological deposits, features and structures and retrieves artefacts, ecofacts and other remains within a specified area or site. There are two basic types of archaeological excavation: research excavation, when time and resources are available to excavate the site fully and at a leisurely pace and development-led excavation, undertaken by archaeologists when the site is threatened by building development.
