ΔΙΕΥΚΡΙΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ
- Musical ensembles that consist of four musicians: two violinists, one viola player and one cellist. String quartets are included in chamber music ensembles. They appeared as a distinct type in the second half of the 18th century and were intended for private performance and enjoyment. Since the early 19th century, however, they were included in public concerts. String quartets, for which a multitude of important works has been composed, constitute until toady one of the most recognisable types of musical ensembles of western art music.
