In a broad sense, the application of experimental methods (including systematic manipulation and control of relevant
variables, careful observation, and, often, statistical analysis) to any area in psychology. More narrowly, some central problem areas in psychology that have typically and traditionally been investigated (since the middle of the 19th century) with experimental methods, including sensation and perception, learning and motivation, reaction time, psychophysics and physiological psychology.
