- The study of the structure of living organisms, especially of their internal parts, by means of dissection and microscopical examination. Modern anatomy was established as a method and practice related to medicine and surgery in the early modern times, focused mostly on the dissection of the human and animal body. During that period it was also used for art. Until the 19th century, anatomy was inseparable from physiology.
