  • People who are reduced to the status of property under one or more owners. Therefore, they are robbed of any personal, civil and political rights, are subject to forced labour and concubinage, and may be bought, sold, and handed over. Slaves are subject to a legal status that defines their position as property assets (and sometimes concedes them some rights in regard to their owners' behaviour towards them) or are placed de facto in this situation, even though it is prohibited by law.
