- Christians who belong to one of the Lutheran Churches, which follow the teachings of Martin Luther and other 16th-century theologians. This set of teachings, which inaugurated the Reformation and culminated in the split of the Protestants from the Catholic Church, focuses on the primary importance of the Scriptures in relation to Christian tradition, on the salvation and justification of Man by divine grace and through faith, on the rejection of a hierarchical ecclesiastical structure, and on the distinction between law and gospel. This teaching was expressed in the Augsburg Confession (1530) and the Book of Concord (1580). Lutheranism, in contrast to more radical Protestant branches, like Calvinism, acknowledges liturgical practices and views on the sacraments that originate from before the Reformation.
